Mary Fettig

Mary Fettig

Mary Fettig chats with Neil Van Valkenburgh between sets. Although she now plays mostly broadway shows, Mary has made a dent in jazz history as the first woman to play and record with Stan Kenton's band. (For the record, playing Andrew LLoyd Webber ten shows a week hasn't taken any of the edge off her jazz chops—she still swings with the best of 'em.) Neil was a man of few words, but communicated well enough through his trombone to let everyone know his jazz sentiments. I also need to apologize to Charles Hamilton; he's the only member of the band for whom I didn't manage to shoot a close-up (but you can see him as a 'dot' in the band photo!). Charles, Neil, Wayne and Dave made for a fantastic trombone section and created some great music, especially when Joe would feature them each night on Granted.
